The premise of Distiller is simple. The first thing to do is ask for a recommendation, following which Distiller asks you whether you want:
1. Something new to try
2. A gift
3. Something for your collection
4. Something to share
Then it identifies your consumer category, ranging from newbie to connoisseur. You are asked some additional questions before viola, a whisky is recommended to you basis your answers. I suspect their database is quite limited however, or the algorithm is at least. Because as long as I answer "Off the charts" to how adventurous I'm feeling and select the $80-$150 price band, I get recommended Islay Mist 17 YO Blended no matter how I respond to the other questions.
Still, it's a fun little game and it might come in useful if you're standing at a vast Duty Free collection and find it difficult to make a choice. The website's database can also be accessed by search functions. Here's what they have to say about my favourite malt:
"Far from a shrinking violet, Laphroaig is loud and proud, get used to it. They have managed to produce a whisky showcasing the sights and aromas of the island. The peat, burned to dry the malt, is abundantly clear as is the seaweed found lapping the shores just steps from the distillery. That sweet salty sea air found on Islay is woven throughout their whiskies."
